What is an air source heat pump?

An Air Source Heat Pump is an alternative method of heating for your home or commercial properties. The way in which an air source heat pump works is to absorb the heat from the outside air to power your radiators, underfloor heating system and provide hot water.

There are two types of air-source heat pump systems:

Air to Water

This method is closer to your traditional boiler in that it provides hot water which can be pumped through underfloor heating pipes to heat the property, (if retro-fitting, large radiators can be used instead) and natural hot water to your taps. This is the ideal system for new builds as they can be included in the building specification.

Air to Air

This creates warm air that is vented throughout your property. Ideal for heating but this method cannot provide hot water. The additional benefit of this method is the system can operate in reverse and like an air conditioning unit, provide cool air in the summer months. Note: The heat pump still requires an electricity supply to pump the water.

How does an air source heat pump work?

The heat pump takes the heat from the air and boosts it to the temperature required to heat your premises, the fluid then passes through a compressor where its temperature is increased and provides temperature heat to the heating and hot water circuits of the house.

Fuel & costs

There are no fuel savings if the existing property uses natural gas. Air Source Heat Pump is one the most cost-effective way to heat your home.

Do you need planning permission?

In most cases, there is no need for planning permission. The major exception is, if your property is listed, in which case you will have to obtain listed building consent.

Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)

To encourage the use of clean renewable energy, the UK Government launched a scheme to help with the cost of those in domestic living. You can receive payments for up to 7 years based on the amount of renewable heat made by your heating system when you install or have already installed an eligible renewable heating technology. The Energy Savings Trust found in 2015 typical savings of £295 to £425 per year when replacing gas heating and £715 to £1,295 per year when replacing electric immersion heating. Air Source Pumps qualify for the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) Programme and a typical house in England, Scotland or Wales could receive between £905 to £1,365 a year.
